Glossary

The terms used on this site, briefly defined. Where useful, each definition refers to the page that develops it.

Electronic money
Monetary value stored in electronic form, issued on receipt of funds and accepted in payment by third parties. It is not a bank deposit. Find out more.
Earmarking
Attaching rules of use to electronic money: authorised holder, recipient category, period, ceiling. Find out more.
Programme
Framework defined by a funder: envelope, rules of use, roles, expected reporting. Find out more.
Issuer
Institution authorised to issue electronic money on receipt of funds. Find out more.
Distributor
Where applicable, the entity that distributes electronic money on behalf of the issuer.
Holder
Person or organisation that holds a balance of electronic money and has a right to redemption under the conditions provided for.
Recipient
Person or organisation that accepts the operation in payment for a good or a service.
Beneficiary
In a solidarity or aid scheme, the person for whom the aid is intended. They are not necessarily the funder or the organisation.
Ledger
Record of the scheme’s entries. It establishes the integrity of a history, not the truthfulness of the data entered. Find out more.
Redemption
Conversion of electronic money into euros, under the conditions provided for in the contract. Find out more.
Authorised operation
Operation whose rules are satisfied: the amount is reserved on the available balance.
Recorded operation
Operation charged to the programme’s used amount. It is a second event, distinct from authorisation.
KYC / KYB
Know your customer, natural or legal person: identification elements collected at onboarding. Find out more.
API
